Description: Striking and highly detailed fine unusual 1760 copper engraved so-called optical view featuring a view of Amsterdam, Netherlands. Shows the city with his buildings, churches and bridges. Several inhabitants and several sailing ships complete the view. The Vues d'optique were specifically developed to provide the illusion of depth when viewed through a zograscope, also known as an "optical diagonal machine" or viewers with similar functions. The optical views were meant to be seen with a special viewer to enhance the three dimensional effect, a zograscope. This is an optical device for enhancing the sense of depth perception from a flat picture. It consists of a large magnifying lens through which the picture is viewed. Some models have the lens mounted on a stand in front of an angled mirror. This allows someone to sit at a table and to look through the lens at the picture flat on the table. Pictures viewed in this way need to be left-right reversed; this is obvious in the case of writing. A print made for this purpose is called a vue d’optique or perspective view. They were very popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. The colouring is often bright and naпve, as for children’s illustrations. Travelling vendors who went around to fairs offering these views, often did the handcolouring themselves, so it tends to be a bit rough compared with other period engravings. Mapmaker: Jean Franзois Daumont was a Parisian mercier, publisher and print dealer , active from around 1745 until his death in 1768. The first name Jean-Franзois which was attributed to him by the Dictionary of print publishers in Paris under the Ancien Rйgime results from a confusion with that of his son. As Thierry Depaulis recently established (see References), his real first name was Cuny . But the person concerned most often named himself Cuny Franзois, or even simply Franзois. Jean-Francois Daumont was born in Metz ( Trois-Йvкchйs ), September 4, 1717, baptized the next day and named Cuny. Arrived in Paris around 1737, he married on September 12, 1738. On September 7, 1746, Cuny Franзois Daumont was received as a merchant-mercer 3. A few months later we find him among the creditors of Gilles Fatou, known as Beluche, print dealer in Tours 1 . He then lived in rue de la Ferronnerie. Daumont then publishes all kinds of prints, but mainly geographical maps and some popular images. He even co-edited some musical scores, notably by Jean-Philippe Rameau . In 1757, he left rue de la Ferronnerie to settle in rue Saint-Martin , near Saint-Julien-des-Menestriers , parish of Saint-Josse, in a house he had bought two years earlier. He traded in prints at least since 1746. He is also known as a publisher of optical views and wallpaper merchant . Jean Franзois Daumont died on September 18, 1768. He leaves a comfortable heritage to his heirs, whose inventory is made from September 27 to November 9, 1768.
