Jean-Jacques Grandville (1803-1847) was a talented French illustrator, who made satirical and humouristic fantasy illustrations. The succes of his work led him to make illustrations for numerous periodicals, such as Le Charivari, Le Caricature and L’Artiste. His style and humour had a marked influence on John Tenniel and other Punch illustrators. He is also seen as a precursor and inspiration of surrealism, especially his illustrations for Un Autre Monde." ca. 1860, 26 x 16 cm, sauber und gut erhalten

Images by the great Parisian cartoonist J.J Grandville from his Les Fleurs Animйes - his last work, originally published posthumously in 1847, the year of his death. With its mix of the satirical and poetic, the book is considered to be one of his most supreme achievements.
A series of delightful prints illustrating flowers personified in the form of lovely maidens and their animal retinues. Each early 19th-century female figure is richly costumed in the leaves, blossoms and garlands that designate her flower. She presides in an appropriate 'natural' setting, often surrounded by anthropomorphized insects and birds that pay her homage. These poetic interpretations of nature are a fetching example of early 19th-century literary and artistic invention.

"It is a fact that people collect. It is not easy to answer on the question why. They are guided probably by both - their personal preferences and trying to generate some material values, nay, even multiplying value by creating a set of individual pieces. There is a drop of boasting in gathering, as well as a desire to stop the magic that is hidden in old things used by the former generation." - E. Kowecka, M. i J. Јosiowie, L.
