? Charming 17th century copper engraved print has a near folk-art feel, a style unique to this historical era. Utterly unlike anything produced today and of modern aesthetic appeal for this reason. This is an original antique map published in 1685 and NOT a modern copy or reprint! Striking and highly decorative unusual copper engraving comes from the first edition of Alain Manesson Mallet's monumental "Description de l'Univers", published in Paris in 1685, perhaps the greatest work of its kind in the 17th Century. An unusual copper engraved antique print depicting the Grand or King of Madagascar and child with spears with natives, several figures, zebu cattle and animals in the background. Cartographic Reference(s): Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmakers Engraver: Alain Manesson Mallet (1630-1706) Technique: copper engraving Title: Grand De Madagascar ? Date: 1685 ( undated ) ? The overall size of this print with margins approx 13.8 x 21.1 cm (6" x 4") and suitable for framing. The reverse side - clear ? Alain Manesson Mallet (1630-1706) was a French cartographer and engineer. He started his career as a soldier in the army of Louis XIV, became a Sergeant-Major in the artillery and an Inspector of Fortifications. He also served under the King of Portugal, before returning to France, and his appointment to the court of Louis XIV. His military engineering and mathematical background led to his position teaching mathematics at court. ? His major publications were Description de L'Univers (1683) in 5 volumes, and Les Travaux de Mars ou l'Art de la Guerre (1684) in 3 volumes. ?? His Description de L'Universe contains a wide variety of information, including star maps, maps of the ancient and modern world, and a synopsis of the customs, religion and government of the many nations included in his text. It has been suggested that his background as a teacher led to his being concerned with entertaining his readers. This concern manifested itself in the charming harbour scenes and rural landscapes that he included beneath his description of astronomical concepts and diagrams. Mallet himself drew most of the figures that were engraved for this book. ? Very strong and dark impression on good paper. Paper with chains. Plate uncolored. Mostly clean and well preserved example, the image displays a fine patina. Due to the age of this map some imperfections to be expected! The paper is in very good condition and looks stunning. Please look at the photos carefully, including cropped detail photos, which will show you more than you can see with your eyes alone. ? Your purchase is this original plate; I do not deal in modern reprints, reproductions or copies. ? All prints of this age should be protected from exposure to direct sunlight. ----------------------- Але́н Манессо́н-Малле́, (фр.
