Writer: Robert Plot (1640-96) was born in Kent and received a BA degree from Oxford University in 1661, an MA in 1664 and a Law degrees in 1671. In 1677 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and became. Secretary in 1682. He was responsible for the publication of Nos. 143 to 166 of The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. In 1683 Elias Ashmole appointed him as the first keeper of his museum, the now well known Ashmolean Museum and Bodleian Library in Oxford. Although there for just seven years, Plot acquisitioned a vast collection of what were considered natural curiosities, many of which he hadescribed in both his histories of Oxfordshire and Staffordshire. These objects are still today preserved in the Ashmolean Museum. He did not complete his life ambitions to write, as he intended, the Natural Histories of Kent and Middlesex for which several extensive MSS survived him. He achieved many more distinctions before his death on April 30th 1696. Robert Plot was not a freemason. His love was the study of natural history and this is reflected in his publications, including the folio size Natural History of Staffordshire printed in Oxford in 1686.
Engraver: Michael Burghers, or Burgers [Utrecht or Amsterdam, c. 1640 – 1733 (between 1723 and 1743 or in January 1727)], was a Dutch Golden Age engraver and draftsman. Probably born in Utrecht or Amsterdam around 1640, he worked in Oxford between 1676 and 1723. However he was already active from 1674, as evidenced by the first documented payment, and until 1725-1726, as evidenced by the last. He reached England with David Loggan, of whom he was probably a pupil, and settled in 1673 at Oxford [, due to the capture of Utrecht by Louis XIV. Between 1676 and 1719, he took care of the realization of all the illustrations of the Oxford Almanac. Loggan was appointed publicus academiae sculptor in 1669 and Burghers worked under him, succeeding him in July 1694. According to Thomas Hearne, at the time of his death he was very wealthy and considered the best engraver in England. In fact, he received large sums of money from the University of Oxford for his engravings, up to about Ј100 a year, to which was added the revenue for the prints sold directly by him. He actually owned his own printing press with which he made small editions of his own prints and tested the works for the University. In addition to illustrations for the Almanac, he also executed title pages for books, such as for Robert Plot's De origine fontium (1685) and illustrations for the 1688 edition of John Milton's Paradise Lost from drawings by John Baptist Medina . He made many small views of new buildings at Queen's College and drew an exact plan of the old chapel before it was torn down. In addition to making new moulds, he also took care of fixing pre-existing ones and making prints. Burghers sometimes signed his works with the monogram MB.
