Mapmaker: Fulvio Fontana was born in Modigliana, in Romagna (in the part then subject to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany), in October 1648 (he was baptized on the 27th) to Sebastiano, a jurist admitted to the citizenship and honors of Florence in 1652, and to Maria Zauli. On February 2nd. 1669, already doctor in utroque iure, was welcomed into the Society of Jesus and entered the novitiate of S. Andrea al Quirinale in Rome, where for a year he dedicated himself to the study of rhetoric (1671-72), without however continuing with that of theology. After having taught grammar at the college of Terni (1672-76) and that of Parma (1676-77), he moved to nearby Busseto, to the fathers of the Venetian province, to complete the third year of probation or last year of novitiate (1677 -78). He was then assigned again to the college of Terni, where he was a minister and apostolic collaborator (1678-80). On February 2nd. 1680, in Loreto, he took his vows as spiritual coadjutor. In the following years he was in Sezze and Tivoli (1680-81), in Borgo San Sepolcro (1681-85) and in Recanati (1685-87) as a preacher. After an annual held in the cathedral of Padua by will of bishop Gregorio Barbarigo he was assigned to the college of Fano to hold sermons for a good death. In Fano - where he remained until around 1712, apart from the periods in which he was assigned to the novitiate of Florence (1699-1700) and to the Roman College (1701-1702) - he met Father P. Segneri (senior): between 1689 and 1692 he was his companion in the missions in the Marche, Liguria and Tuscany together with his father G.P. Pinamonti. The missionary activity continued with the latter, when Segneri was called to Rome by Innocent XII as apostolic preacher (1692). On August 15th. In 1695 he became professed, pronouncing in Arezzo the only three solemn vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. Upon Pinamonti's death, which occurred during a mission to Orta, in the diocese of Novara, on 25 (or 26) June 1701, he proved to be very prudent in believing in the alleged miracles performed by his companion. Starting from 1705 he added missions in the diocese of Milan to those in Switzerland and Tyrol. He thus introduced the missionary method learned from Segneri in the German countries, authorized and encouraged by Clement At the end of 1714, after having been assigned for a period to the college of Arezzo (1713-14), he abandoned the missions, carried out for twenty-four years, and was appointed penitentiary in the Holy House of Loreto (30 Nov. 1714). Fontana died in Fermo on 29 March 1723.
