1/ Cotton Manufacture (Cotton Manufacture), drawings of industrial equipment for a textile factory.
The sheet shows:
Tube Frame (Tube machine): Figures 3 (top view) and 4 (cut) show the mechanism of pulling cotton tape from a high tank through the roller system.
Fly Frame (Market Machine): Figures 1 (side view) and 2 (front view) have a detailed frame, drive wheels and a number of spindles with coils.
This illustration was published in Edinburgh by A. & C. Black in 1850 and is a classic example of technical documentation during the Industrial Revolution.
2/ The antique engraving "Plate CV: Bleaching" (Table 105: Bleaching) is an illustration of Victorian textile equipment published in Edinburgh by A&C Black circa 1850. It depicts two key stages of industrial fabric processing:
Damping Machine: Depicted at the top of the engraving. It was used to moisturize the fabric evenly before subsequent finishing processes.
Calender (Calender): Shown at the bottom. It is a massive machine with heavy shafts designed to smooth, seal or shine fabric with pressure and heat.
The illustration refers to the period of the industrial revolution (late XVIII - XIX centuries), when textile production passed from manual labor at home to large factories.
The use of such machines made it possible to accelerate the final processing of fabrics ten times.
Such equipment of the time was often powered by water power through water wheels or steam engines.
The engraving was part of encyclopedic publications such as Encyclopedia Britannica, published by A&C Black in the nineteenth century.
3/ Antique engraving "DYEING", which is Plate CCXV (table 215) from the 8th edition of Encyclopaedia Britannica.
Main characteristics
Date of publication: 1850.
Place of publication: Edinburgh, A. & C. Black.
Designed by W. Ross, engraving by G. Aikman.
The sheet presents technical illustrations of industrial equipment for dyeing fabrics of the middle of the XIX century:
Fig. 6: The front view of the dyeing box.
Fig. 7: Plan or top view (Plan) of the dye box.
Fig. 8: Section of the Cleaning Boiler.
Fig. 9: Front view of the cleaning boiler.
Fig. 10 & 11: Plans for the lid and top of the boiler.
4/ Antique engraving “Dyeing” (DYEING), designated as Plate CCXIX (CCXIX Table). It depicts in detail the Padding Machine - a device used in the textile industry of the XIX century for impregnation of fabrics with dyes or other compounds.
According to the captions, the drawing was published by A. & C. Black in Edinburgh, which is known for the release of Encyclopedia Britannica.
Main elements of the drawing:
Fig. 3 and Fig. 4: Show the car in the section on the side (End Elevation) and front (Front Elevation). You can see massive shafts (rollers), through which the fabric was passed to evenly distribute the paint and squeeze the surplus.
Fig. 5: Plan (top view) of the entire installation.
Fig. 1 and Fig. 2: Detailed images of the Liquor Tub, the container into which the fabric was immersed before passing through the shafts. It shows a cross section and a view from above.
Such machines were used for a process called "plusing." The fabric in a straightened form passed through a bath with dye, and then compressed between heavy shafts. This ensured a deep and uniform penetration of the composition into the fibers, which was critical for the mass production of quality textiles during the Industrial Revolution.
5/ Antique engraving tools and machinery for glass treatment.
Basic information:
Title: "GLASS" (Glass), Table CCLXXV (275).
Publisher: A. & C. Black, Edinburgh (indicated at the bottom of the page). This confirms that the leaf belongs to one of the editions of the famous Encyclopedia Britannica, most likely the middle of the XIX century (7th or 8th edition).
Content: The diagrams (figures 1-14) show specialized machines, vise and devices for grinding, cutting or polishing glass sheets and lenses.
Such engravings were used in encyclopedias to demonstrate the achievements of the industrial revolution and technological processes of the time.
