Beautiful antique botanical print Orchid Aerides Lawrenceae 1894 Berthe Herincq Illustrator: Berthe Herincq, French illustrator and lithographer active in the last decade of the 1800s in Paris. She is the author of numerous naturalistic and scientific works, especially botany. Publisher: Klincksiek, bookstore and publishing house founded in Paris in 1838 by Friederich Klincksieck (1813-1874), later active internationally with libraries in London and Strasbourg. Vintage print from the "Atlas of exotic and European garden plants and apartments", edited by Desirи Bois, published in Paris in 1896 by Paul Klincksieck. The work belongs to the numerous series of a few hundred ancient prints specially designed for this famous botanical collection. Dйsirй Georges Jean Marie Bois , French horticulturalist and botanist was born October 09, 1856 in Granville in Manche. He entered March 8, 1872, then less than 16 years old, as a student gardener in the culture department of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris, which was then directed by Joseph Decaisne (1807-1882). Dйsirй Bois had a long career in this institution. In 1877, he founded with several of his colleagues, a professional instruction company for horticultural education. In 1878, he became head of the grain mill at the Museum, then, in 1879, he was appointed preparer of the new chair of phanerogamy. Admitted to the Botanical Society of France in 1884, he then taught at the colonial school from 1896 to 1913, then from 1920 to 1932 as professor of culture after his return to the Museum. He also chaired the Sociйtй Botanique de France from 1920 to 1921 and then, for a second term, from 1931 to 1932. Dйsirй Bois spent most of his career in the Jardin des Plantes, the historic heart of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris. Dйsirй Bois was in his time a great communicator. He was among others a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Turin and of the Spanish Society of Natural History, editor-in-chief of the Horticultural Review and of the Journal of the National Horticultural Society of France, president of the section of Scientific studies of the National Horticultural Society and the Botanical Section of the National Acclimatization Society. Dйsirй Bois published numerous works: “New Winter Vegetables” in 1879; " Le Potager d'un curieux " , with Nicolas-Auguste Paillieux (1812-1898), History, culture and uses of 100 edible plants little known or unknown, in 1885; “Le Petit Jardin” between 1889 and 1908; "Experimental cultures" with NA. Paillieux in 1890; “Apartment Plants and Window Plants” in 1891 and 1929; “Illustrated Horticultural Dictionary” in 1893 and 1899; “The Orchids, an amateur's manual” in 1893; "Atlas of exotic and European garden and apartment plants" in 1896. We also owe Dйsirй Bois: “The Harvest and Shipping of Seeds and Living Plants from Hot Countries” in 1902; “Presentation of Pe-tsai, or Chinese cabbage” ( Brassica chinensis L.) in 1905; “Plants, their role in everyday life” in 1909; "The harvest and shipment of seeds & living plants" in 1911; “Biographical note on M. Jules Gravereaux” in 1916; "Food plants in all peoples and through the ages" in 1927 and 1937; "Vegetable plants in tropical countries" in 1935. Among the 150 or so plants described and named during his career by Dйsirй Bois, are accepted by today's international botanical nomenclature: Argyreia pierreana (Convolvulaceae) in 1906; Begonia perrieri (Begoniaceae) in 1915; Cotoneaster adpressus (Rosaceae) in 1904; Cotoneaster bullatus in 1904; Cotoneaster franchetii in 1902; Erysimum marshallii (Brassicaceae) in 1913; Ophiopogon regnieri (Convallariaceae) in 1906; Prunus canescens (Rosaceae) in 1904; etc. The monospecific genus Cheiranthesimum cayeuxii (Brassicaceae) , created by Desired Bois in 1913, has not yet been validated by international botanical authorities. The same is true for the species of palm Iguanura speranskyana (Arecaceae), which he described and named in 1899. 6" x 9 1/2" 24 x 16 cm (9 1/2" x 6 1/4"). Their work focussed on plants which gave brilliance and charm to the garden, and are some of the best antique botanical illustrations. The paper is high quality, matt with a subtle creamy tone. The coloring is bright and uses a beautiful range of colors. It is in excellent condition.
