? Detailed map of Siberia, extending from the White Sea and the Caspian Sea in the west to Irkuckoi Province, Jakutky on the Lena River and regions just to the east. Centered on the Jenisi River.
Original Title: Carte de la Siberie Et des Pays voisins Pour servir а l'Histoire gйnйrale des Voyages Par le S. Bellin Ing. de la Marine.
Description: This is a 1780 Jacques‑Nicolas Bellin map of Siberia. Depicting the region from Moscow and St. Petersburg to central Asia, numerous cities, towns, and villages are labeled. The region’s rivers are illustrated in detail, along with its many mountain ranges.
Traced Voyages ‑ Gmelin and De L’Isle.
Two routes are traced from western Russia east into Siberia. The first, and most consequential, follows the beginnings of Johann Georg Gmelin’s part of the second Kamchatka Expedition, led by Vitus Bering. Gmelin left St. Petersburg in August 1733 and travelled through the Urals and western Siberia to Yeniseisk. On this expedition Gmelin was the first person to scientifically prove that the Caspian Sea is, in fact, below the level of the Mediterranean. Gmelin finally reached Bering’s headquarters in Yakutsk in September 1736, three years after he left St. Petersburg. The second expedition followed on this map is that of Nicolas De L’Isle, brother to the more famous French cartographer Guillaume De L’Isle, between Moscow and Berezove. De L’Isle was in Russia working for the imperial court as a cartographer when he and Gmelin set off to find any details about De L’Isle’s missing brother from Moscow.
Originally created for Abbe Prevost’s Histoire Generale des Voyages by Jacques‑Nicolas Bellin, this map was published by Jean Francois de la Harpe in his Abrйgй de l’Histoire Generale des Voyages in 1780. Few examples of the 1780 edition of this map are catalogued in OCLC. They are part of the institutional collections at Brown University, Universitдtsbibliothek Mьnchen in Munich, Universitдtsbibliothek Erlangen‑Nьernberg also in Munich, Universitдtsbibliothek Bern, and the National Library of Poland. The works by Prйvost and de la Harpe are well represented institutionally.

Mapmaker: Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772) was among the most important mapmakers of the eighteenth century. In 1721, at only the age of 18, he was appointed Hydrographer to the French Navy. In August 1741, he became the first Ingйnieur de la Marine of the Dйpфt des cartes et plans de la Marine (the French Hydrographic Office) and was named Official Hydrographer of the French King.
During his term as Official Hydrographer, the Dйpфt was the one of the most active centers for the production of sea charts and maps in Europe. Their output included a folio-format sea atlas of France, the Neptune Francois. He also produced a number of sea atlases of the world, including the Atlas Maritime and the Hydrographie Francaise. These gained fame and distinction all over Europe and were republished throughout the eighteenth and even in the nineteenth century.
Bellin also produced smaller format maps such as the 1764 Petit Atlas Maritime, containing 580 finely-detailed charts. He also contributed a number of maps for the 15-volume Histoire Generale des Voyages of Antoine Franзois Prйvost.
Bellin set a very high standard of workmanship and accuracy, cementing France's leading role in European cartography and geography during this period. Many of his maps were copied by other mapmakers across the continent.
