Tsar Peter the Great was fascinated by Bцttger's invention at the court of Saxony. From 1718 onward, he attempted to penetrate the secret of "white gold," but neither the foreigners summoned to the Russian court nor his endeavors to obtain the Arcanum from Dresden proved effective. Even a recipe purchased around 1740 at a high price from a master porcelain maker to the Emperor of China proved useless.
Success only arrived after 1744, when Christoph Conrad Hunger was summoned to St. Petersburg. Hunger, who had worked with Bцttger at Meissen and was later employed in Vienna, Venice, and Stockholm, was appointed as a gilder and enamel painter. However, he proved to lack the necessary skill for porcelain manufacture and was expelled from the country in 1748.
He was succeeded by Dmitry Vinogradov, a mining engineer who had studied metallurgy in Freiberg. A talented technician, Vinogradov documented his porcelain studies and working methods with meticulous precision, ensuring the survival and further development of the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory. To this day, his technical notes provide the production basis for what is now known as the Lomonosov factory.
The products of this factory, richly illustrated in this monograph, clearly show that its production was oriented toward the needs of the Imperial Court, much like the great European manufacturing centers. From the earliest snuffboxes to the elaborate multi-figure centerpieces for the Tsars' tables and the monumental vases of the 19th century, every piece bears the imprint of imperial patronage.
The technical evolution of the factory led to exceptionally high standards. As shown in this catalogue, the great porcelain services provided everything a princely table of the time could require, executed with masterful decoration. Imperial porcelain was not only magnificent but also displayed a distinctly Russian perception of beauty from the very beginning. This style is characterized by rich decorative shapes, vibrant and dense colors, a variety of floral and ornamental motifs, a narrative verve in its imagery, and exuberant sculptural elements—all uniting to form an unmistakable aesthetic whole.
The book also includes a comprehensive list of Lomonosov marks and signs dating from 1744 to 1994.
